Description

This volume explains the importance of wine in the Christian tradition of the Eucharist. Also called Holy Communion, the Sacrament of the Altar, the Blessed Sacrament or the Lord’s Supper, the Eucharist is a sacred ordinance for Christians. The Bible notes that at the Last Supper, the feast held for Jesus and his disciples just before his Crucifixion, Christ notes that the bread his followers eat is his body and the wine that they drink is his blood. He calls them to repeat this ritual in remembrance of Him. Today, Christian churches perform the tradition each Sunday. In the Catholic Church, Communion is seen as a true sacrament and when consecrated in the Eucharist, the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Christ. In the Protestant tradition, Communion is more commonly called an ordinance, and the bread and wine are seen as more of an expression of faith and obedience, not a direct channel of divine grace. Regardless, the choice of wine in many ceremonies of the Eucharist is an important task and represents yet another way the beverage has become an integral part of human society.
